Counseling for Autism & Neurodivergence

Post traumatic stress disorder is a mental health diagnosis that is observed by an individual experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event of “actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence”. Trauma can look different for each individual and may manifest in very different ways.

What does PTSD look like?

  • Re-experiencing the event (Flashbacks, repetitive or intrusive memories)

  • Avoidance (of people, places, things that remind one of the associated thoughts, feelings or memories)

  • Hypervigilence (arousal and reactivity to sense of perceived threat)

  • Difficulty experiencing positive emotions, or a range of emotions

What is the difference in PTSD and C-PTSD?

  • Complex post traumatic stress disorder includes the same core symptoms of PTSD, but with 3 additional symptom groups:

  • Problems in affect regulation (emotion dysregulation, anger)

  • Difficulty in relationships and feeling close to others (detachment)

  • Negative beliefs about oneself related to the traumatic event(s)

What works in treatment?

Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is a research-backed treatment that has been found to target and reduce negative symptoms and cognitions of PTSD. The purpose of TF-CBT is to return to a place of hope with a greater sense of being in control of one’s thoughts and behaviors.

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) CPT focuses on how one processes and perceives the trauma they have been through. The goal is for the therapist and client to work together to understand how one’s experiences has shaped worldview and how to make meaning out of their story.
